type: Simple Scrabble
Objectives:
1. To challenge the
students’ knowledge and ability in creating words.
2. To enable students to
gain new vocabulary.
Group size :
40
– 45 students (standard classroom)

needs to prepare the grid papers for the students.

Rules
of the game:
1.
Students will be divided into pairs.
2.
The time given for one round of the ‘Simple Scrabble’ game is 10-minute.
3.
A sheet of paper with drawn boxes (30x30) will be given to each group. Each
paper has its own starting word.
4.
Each group will determine their turn to move vertically or horizontally.
5.
After each turn of scrabble, each group needs to exchange their papers.
6.
The mark allocation is as below:
· i. 1 mark is given to each alphabet. If you
have a word with 13 alphabets, then you get 13 marks.
· ii. No
marks will be given to the word that is wrongly spelled (even if it is just one
letter mistake)
7.
At the end of the game, teacher will count the marks for both of the group.
Procedures:
1.
Students are divided into pairs. If there are 40 students, you will have 20
pairs per lesson.
2.
Teacher distributes the grid paper to each pair.
3.
Teacher explains the rules of the game to the students. [Rules of the games are stated
above]
4.
Each pair will compete with another pair for this game.
5.
After all groups finish their game; another round of game can be done. The
participants for this round would be the winners for the first round.
6.
At the end, marks for each group will be calculated.
Variations:
1. This game can be played by 2 people (pairs) or 3
people in a group.
2. The competition for this game could be among 3
groups. New rules need to be created by the teacher.
Materials:
Grid paper for the students
Recommendations:
1. Teacher needs to prepare a set of instruction for
the game so that the students will easily understand on what they have to do.
2. For that reason, teacher needs to explain the
instruction to the students at the beginning of the activity so that no
misunderstanding will happen.
3. Preparation
of grid paper for the students will allow no time to be wasted during the
activity.
