MY CONTRIBUTION- ELC (STRAP 24th-25th 07)

Hai everyone!!!

First of all, I would like to thank our beloved lecturer Mr. Ghazali Bunari who has help a lot in the success of the recent English Language Camp. Next, is to Dr Noor Azman and all the crews (3SPL students') that were involved in the language camp. Now let's start with jotting down some of the contribution before, and during the camp.

·        There were ample of task to be completed before the camp held. I was in charged to work on the facilitators' manual. To handle this task was not as easy as it was expected because there were many changes made before, during and in the mid of the date of the camp. This was due to the changes in the number of students'. At first, about 228 participants were listed and the number decrease to 212 participants.
·       Being the bureau of manuals under Izzati and Shereena was splendid! They helped a lot and we sat together to make changes in the game manuals to make facilitators job simpler. In fact we encountered many problems regarding the manuals that were submitted to us. However, we manage to consult the game masters and get clear picture on the whole frame of work. Then, we collected the first drafts and  edited where necessary until the last draft was certified by Mr.G.
·      Moreover, I was the game master for the 'magic box' game. I was in charge to select a game that will encourage students to speak. So I came out with a game that requires students to speak based on the topic chosen from the box. The materials such as cut out topic were discussed with the Camp A game master, Raihana. She gave numerous ideas and later a further discussion was done with my assistant, Sis Hajar. Millions of thanks to her!!! She helped me with the preparation of materials that were supposed to be used for the game.
·      Next, I was appointed to be the mini director for the first group (Group A) that consists of 57 participants throughout the camp. My group members were Sis Dayang, Sis Hajar, Ruzaini, Andrew, and Rubiah. Millions of gratitude to them too as they planned the game appropriately. In the smaller group, I facilitated the participants with simple instruction and made some changes in the game due to time constraint. I add up the free time by asking students to express their views on learning English and punished students who spoke in Malay by deducting their stamps.
·      Generally, I manage to assist students in accomplishing the language camp. My group facilitators gave full motivation to those who was reluctant to speak in English. I made many approachable contacts to involve students' participation. As a result the passive students' began to interact actively in the games. It was a positive remark for all of us.

REFLECTION

There are many advantages gained through this camp and it is as follow:

·      Aid in team working. We as the facilitators helped one another as they were many students coming in the afternoon of the first day of the camp. Basically, I am proud that the facilitators manage to overcome the shortcoming without being involved into quarrels. A big hand for all of us!!!
·      Moreover, the leadership was clearly shown. We as the facilitators could manage to conduct an English camp for a big number of students (212 participants). I basically feel that I am more confident in engaging into bigger events in future. It tested my ability to confront with all ages of students and also helped in knowing their feelings about English.
·      This camp helps me to be more skilled as I was engage to passive students'.  I became a better person in solving monotonous atmosphere. Finally, students' begun to engage actively even as there were some students who was not interested at all.
·      Improvise my communication skills in delivering instructions. I was able to instruct students to work efficiently and try to build closer bonds with them. This enables me to be create self confidence while communicating with students of different age, race and background.
