TEH PENG CHUAN- Reflection BEFORE language game class.

I am assigned by my lecturer, Mr Ghazali to teach grammar using language games in a first year class of Faculty of Chemical Engineering.

Prior to this class, I have set some objectives that i would like the students to achieve:

 1.      To enable students to learn how to use subject verb agreement  correctly.
2.         To encourage students to speak in English without pressure.

To achieve this , I have planned to play three games in the class.

1. Sing and identify noun and verbs { 15 min}

a.       The teacher introduce some English  song to the students.
b.      The teacher asks some students to sing the song aloud.
c.    The students a required to identify examples of nouns and verbs in the song.
d.    Teacher writes the answers on the black board.
e.    Student with the highest score will win the game.

2.Words From a Box {30 min}

a. The teacher divides the class into two groups. The students of one group is required to write a noun such as famous peoples, animals and etc on a piece of papers while the other group's students are required to write an action [verb + subject] such as play football , sing a song and etc.

b.Each group sent a representative to act out the noun and action  drawn in the box. After the group members guess the answer correctly. The representative is required to construct a sentence using the noun and verb. [David Beckham plays football very well]

d. The group that get the most correct answers in seven minutes will win the game.

e. Next, another representative from the group is required to draw out the noun and action drawn from the box.After the group members guess the answer correctly. The representative is required to construct a sentence using the noun and verb.

f.The group that get the most correct answers in seven minutes will win the game.

3. Alien {45 min}
a.     Teacher asked students to work in pair.
b. Teacher asked each pairs to take one piece of paper and draw an alien The alien is the combination of human, animal and plant.
c.      Each pair are given 15 to 20 minutes to draw their desired alien.
d.  Teacher collects each pair’s alien picture.
e  Teacher divides the class into another two big groups and explain how the game is played:

i.       Teacher chooses random picture from random groups.
ii.      Two pictures by two pairs will be picked randomly.
iii.       One person from each pair will have to come to the front.
iv.      Another one person from each pair will have to explain how the alien looked like to their partner.
v.       The other partner will have to draw exactly like the picture drawn by the other group.
vii.   Participants in each groups are not allowed to help or stutter any sentences to their group mates in explaining the drawing, but they are allowed to laugh.
viii      Each pair are given 2 minutes to draw on the board.
ix. The pair with most similar drawing get a point.
x. The group with the most points will win the game.

The games is aim at promoting active participation from them beside exposing them to basic grammar component such as  subject verb agreement and preposition.

As for my roles in the class, I act as a facilitators for the students to participate in the games while monitoring and correcting students mistake in the process. Through this class, I hope that the students can learn English in a relax, motivating and interactive way.
