Choosing Games for Experiential Learning Classes.
By: Ammani and Siti Haida

Most of language teacher prefer to adapt language games in their classroom. They realise that students learn language effectively when it is conducted in a fun manner. When students play a particular game, they tend to memorise the content of the game while they are having fun. This method is called experiential learning or experimental learning. Experiential learning occurs when a person engages in an activity and experiences the process spontaneously. In determining the game, the teacher should take few things into consideration. One of it is type of the game that would be introduced to the students. The game must be appropriate with their level of proficiency and it has to be beneficial to the students. Here, we will discuss some tips in choosing an appropriate game for experiential learning in the classroom.

Motivation is the most important aspect when choosing the game. Make sure that the game applies or integrates three main approaches which is kinaesthetic approach, auditory approach and visual approach. Motivation is important because it encourages learner to learn the language. For example, you can create a game that asks the participants to act like an animal. Before doing so, you must show the students pictures of the particular animals.

Besides that, teachers should take the age of the participant into consideration. If the participant is an adult, teacher should assign a task that needs them to think. Majority of adult do not like games which are childish, for examples are the ones which requires running. Try to avoid playing game that they have played before. For teenagers, many of them love to play a game which involves physical movements. For example, treasure hunt.  Meanwhile, children aged below twelve likes to play a game that needs them to sing and dance.

Last but not least, the teacher should also take a look at the level proficiency of the learner before they choose a particular game. For students with low proficiency, it is not advisable to give them task which requires them to think. Moreover it is not advisable to play games which are above their level of proficiency. This situation will de-motivate them and also makes them feel inhibited. Nevertheless, does not assign an easy game for intermediate or advanced learner because they will feel bored.

In conclusion, there are a lot of factors that should be taken into consideration before choosing a game. This is to make sure that they go through the process of experiential learning. Here, the teacher has to find the right game to ensure that learners will have fun by experiencing the learning process as well as they learn the targeted language.

  • There are two modes of knowledge: through argument and through experience. Argument brings conclusions and compels us to concede them, but it does not cause certainty nor remove doubts that the mind may rest in truth, unless this is provided by experience.
