Little contributions

 

I was attached to the transportation bureau headed by Fadhli…whenever I asked him about the transportation issues, he always confidently said that he would settle it, and he did! Efficiency. That gave me more time to focus on preparing my scripts…for drama presentation & closing ceremony. Also prepared part of Sulia's speech, just as a complementary piece upon her request. Preparing scripts is not that easy because I had to really sit down calmly and be selective of words when doing so. The script can never be final…there will always be amendments, even when you're standing behind the rostrum.. that's where chaos starts running in the mind. Oh ya, I also did the final editing of the facilitators' manual (sorry..some mistakes went undetected).

 

 

 

Reflections of Andrew

 

I must admit that I am quite amazed by the proficiency of Shima (the student representative who gave the speech during the closing ceremony). This is quite a rare exception I've come across – a Form 3 student who speaks really fluently in an environment where there would hardly ever exist any opportunities to communicate in English beyond English lessons. She is set apart way ahead of her peers by a 'proficiency divide' – not just in grammatical correctness, but also in eloquence, i.e. fluency, expressiveness and confidence. We chatted a while during the farewell, and I realized I woudn't have been able to speak like her at that age. Having done my practical in a premier school and being formerly a premier school student myself, I must say that such students are hard to come by, what more in non-selected schools.

 

Well, that's that, other issues: emcee-ing is NOT as easy as it looks. When you're up there, you can lose track of things easily. You know, you can even make mistakes without realizing, until you hear laughter.. *wink~  Secondly, I think the various administrative departments in UTM should have been more supportive of our camp. It's done every year as part of the TESL programme, but at times it seemed that our camp was treated without importance during the organizing stages – e.g. booking the bus… Looked like they didn't seem to care…until some cables are pulled..??
