Dear All, we have finished the English Language Camp 2012 in last week.

SUCH A JOYFUL LANGUAGE CAMP :)

Hiaaaa Alohaaaa everybody, 
Finally we are done with language camp. I remember how we were excited for this camp. Honestly, i was scared somehow not because we may not be able to conduct it but because may be the participants may not participate as well. But thank god, everything handled they even enjoyed it. We faced some problems such as the number of participant and some students were late, but still we manage to handle it. I believe this camp was one of the best group work we have done all together. In my opinion this camp showed us, one hand may functions but two hands make voice:) A Turkish idiom :) Finally, thank you so much for cooperating. I am looking forward the other language camps :)))

Postmortem of English Language Camp 2012

Ladies and Gentlemen,
Hai everyone! I am proud to announce here that we have organized our English Language Camp 2012 successfully ! Even though, as a group we faced some problems, we had some conflicts... But here we are today, we are DONE with it! Past is past, lets' move on. Remember, it was only for the sake of our programme.
Today, we had a short postmortem of our program in our  class. I would like to recap some of the issues we have discussed.

1. Debriefing session for every games is something unusual in typical language camps. This session should be encouraged in other language camps too.
2. Participants seem to be enjoyed the camp. *quoted by Mr.Ghazali
3. We expected all 40 students will turn out for the camp. So, we planned all the games based on 40 students.
4. Level of involvement of facilitators never been discussed before the camp. So, some facilitators involved directly in the games and some did not.

Next organizing committee should take note of these. Even we could take these points into consideration if in future we are going to organize any similar language camps.
So, once more thanks to all of my lovely members for your cooperation and commitments ! 

So We've Done It...

First of all, I feel glad that our Language Camp 2012 has started and ended successfully. Thanks to everyone for their hard work and cooperation. I believe that this is the first time we've worked together as a class. Despite our differences, somehow we've managed to complete this task given to us by Mr Ghazali and even done a good job at that. Agree? =)

I would like to share some of my thoughts regarding the language camp.

For your information, I took part in UTMSpace MyEnglish Camp as a facilitator few weeks ago. The camp was joined by secondary school students who were mostly in lower secondary forms (e.g. Form 1-3) and there were also a few students who were in Form 4. What I had observed was that those students reacted quite differently from the participants of our Language Camp. The secondary school students were mostly passive and they needed more encouragement from the facilitators before they were willing to speak up. Plus they preferred and were more comfortable with Malay language and they felt shy at using English. On the other hand, the university students that we met last Saturday were much more confident in using English compared to the secondary students that I met during MyEnglish Camp. I was awed by the differences. It showed that someday those students would grow up to be better and more confident as English language users. It kinda made me ponder what could have caused these changes in a person just in a few years' time. Is it because of the teaching that he has received from his language teachers? Or can it be due to other reasons?

I personally hope that what we've witnessed in those students are indeed the products of the teaching from their dedicated language teachers in the past. It just shows that we, language teachers, play a very important role in developing our student's proficiency level and shaping up their confidence in using English.

Next semester we're finally gonna have our teaching practical. We all know that it's not going to be easy. But still, all the best to everyone and let's strive on no matter what happens! =)

 Finally we finish our language camp and I think its good, don't you?
 We can see everyone of us was doing his/her job well with responsibility. And thanks to the students from computer science and engineering, they are active and happy with us. I was really enjoy. Which part of the language camp you like most? for me, I choose the sketch part, its really interesting. we can see how creative they are. what do you guys think? Hope you all enjoy the language camp.

Here by, I apologise for any mistakes that I made in the planning, dry run or throughout the camp.

Tomorrow I will be the first person to conduct game. I will in charge of the first game of ice breaking section. Through today's rehearsal, we found a lot of problems and weaknesses of each game. Each game needs to do some adjustments, and improve. The rehearsal really helps us to know the advantages and disadvantages of this language camp.

Furthermore, this afternoon I and kube went to supermarket to buy the food hamper. We tried out best to find the cheapest shop and got everything we need. Hope tomorrow you guys can satisfied with the thing we got.

And also for tomorrow, because I will be the first person who conducts the game, so please let me know if there is any change or adjustments you guys made this afternoon when I and kube were absent. And for the other games, I will be the facilitator for the rest of games, so if the station game masters and other game conductors need any help please let me know.

Last preperations

Hello Bunnies,

After today's dry run, I do feel that I need to improve a lot tomorrow. So, here's the list of things that will be in the ice breaking game tomorrow:


1) The demo for the 1st part (by Lin Han ) will have 10 Faci and they will be divided by 2 groups.
      Eg: Animals and Musical Instruments

2)Tonight I will do the "Sentences" for the 2nd part of the game on a Mahjong Paper so that it will be clearer.

Confirmation of Language Camp venue.

After KTF cancel our booking for the hall, i need to start all over again and i went to all college to book any hall available. Only two halls will be available on 8th December that are KDSE and KTDI hall. KTDI college's principles had decline our application as he said that our number is to small for the big hall. Luckily, KDSE staff give full cooperation and one of the staff personally help me to secure the hall. So, our camp will be held at KDSE hall and it comes with PA system and microphone that make our job easier. However, there are some inconvenience regarding the time to return they key of the hall as we need to return it before 5pm on Saturday. Which means we need to finish the camp a bit earlier so that we can return the key on time. Lastly, I hope we can take care of the hall together and return it the way we take it. Game Title:

Game Type:

Listening and speaking

Language Skills:

a)       Macro – listening and speaking skills

b)      Micro-pronunciation, intonation

Level:

Elementary to advance (can be adjust to suit with learners’ level)

Duration:

15-20 minutes

Preparation:

Teacher has to provide the sentences for the students.

Procedure:

1)      Teacher introduces the name of the game and explains the objectives, steps, and rules of the game.

2)      Teacher demonstrates the game.

3)      Teacher divides students in several groups with same number of students per group and make them line up in a row.

4)      Teacher gives out the paper strip containing the sentences.

5)      The first person will come out and read the sentence from teacher and transmit it along the telephone line until the last person in the row.

6)      The last person come out and writes the sentences on the board and gets a new sentence from the teacher.

7)      The students then need to transmit the new sentence along the telephone line and step 6 were repeated until all students had their chance to come out in front.

8)      The game ends.

Rules:

1)      Players need to come out with the nearest sentence with the sample sentences provided by the teacher to win the game.

2)      The first player that receives the sentence from the teacher should only say the sentences once to their friends without repeating the sentences.

3)      Players need to deliver the sentence along the telephone line until it reaches the last player.

4)      Players need to whisper only to the person behind them without letting other friends to hear it.

5)      The listener should not ask their friends to repeat the sentences.

6)      The last player in the lines comes out to write the sentences on the board.

7)      Marks will be given based on the most nearest sentence that the last players can come out with the original sentence. 

So, this is the game that we are going to play tomorrow. Do you guys have any idea or suggestion on how to make it more interesting?

As all of you are informed, I am the emcee for our language camp. Sad news is, I'm having a bad sore throat (some of you know that I lost my voice) and in order to ensure there's an emcee on that day, I would like to suggest Chen Jing to be my co-emcee. That means, both of us will take turns to host it. What do you think ?

Language Camp 2012 Checklist

Here's a simple checklist to show our current progress for Language Camp. 

1. Venue has been changed from KTF to KDSE.
2. Transport will be handled by students themselves.
3. Students will have their meals at KDSE cafe or any other places they can think of.
4. We have received the list of students from Mr Ghazali two weeks ago.
5. Games have been designed and arranged according to slots but no test run has been conducted yet.
6. Printing of programme booklet has been completed. Thanks to Mr Ghazali for his generous sponsorship and Su Ching for her work.
7. Prizes and souvenirs are being prepared.
8. Last but not least, our final preparation in terms of briefing and rehearsal. Good luck to all of us! =)

Make the atmosphere be exciting

Hi, girls and guy, there is still an important job for us to do on the coming language camp which is our duty to make the atmosphere always be exciting on that day. Some problems like some students are not willing to participant or someone is to shy to play the game should be aware. Base on that, we need at first play the game together with them as facis, then we always need to encourage or invite all the members/students to participant in the game, to cheer them up, and make them be excited. Moreover, Moreover, we can show the present to them before playing games, in that way they are motivated to participant and play well in the game.  

Dress up theme

Hello everyone, after all the hardworking for prepared the language camp, finally it going to start on this Saturday in KDSE. M mm, as a responsible photographer, should we talk about our dressing code at that day since our lecturer mentioned as well today? So, bunnies, what about you guys opinion? Which colour your guys prefer? Can we find a colour instead of TESL Programme? By the way, should we have a theme for this dressing code like TESL night? it is just two days before the language camp. Yeah!!! Thanks to everyone we have finalised all the games and we will be having a dry run to play and understand all the game before the camp.

Preparations: Be prepared to conduct your game, make sure all the materials are prepared. We will be the students to experience the game on that day.

Wow~! the language camp is getting closer.. Are you guys excited? I am. :)

Anyways, today I want to talk about the ice breaking games again. Although we have this Friday to the rehearsal , I wanted to make things clear before the actual rehearsal so that you guys know a little about it. To add on, I actually wanted some opinion.

According to the title of the game, I guess by now you know that the game involves themes.
I come up with the theme of :

1)food (10 people including faci)
2)vehicles (10 people including faci)
3)celebrities (10 people including faci)
4)fruits (10 people including faci)
5)stationaries(10 people including faci)


What do you guys think? Any other suggestions or changes of theme? If there is any, please comment, because I need to print these things according to the theme by Thursday. So if you have interesting things to say, please do so quickly, Alright?  ^^


After that game, we will play the game that we played before. The ones that involve the questions and rotation in the circle that Mr G introduce us. For this game, I am wondering whether we should stick to these questions:

3) My problem is______.


Should we do the same or we do differently? Do you guys have any ideas?To make it interesting, they need to rotate when the music stops. hehe. Interesting right?

Since these 2 games are the games that they will play in the beginning, we seriously need to make it interesting and fun so that we can have their attention. So we(Lin Han &me) NEED you guys cooperation in helping us out.I feel that everyone should participate in the ice breaking game in order for the students to get to know the faci. What do you think?

Material Preparation

Hey guys, please list down (by comment this post) the materials that you need me to prepare by latest in this Thursday, so that I have time to prepare for you guys.
There are some materials I have already applied from faculty, so you may want to refer the previous post that I have posted. I already listed down what material that we have now.
And also, list down the amount that you want. For example, paper = 15 pieces, marker pen = 3.

Take note: I will assume that you don't need me to prepare the materials if you didn't post in here.

Bad News =(

              Ladies and gentleman, I have a sad news for all. Today as we have planned,  Su Ching  and I went to SUB printing center to submit the documents that meant to be photocopied for us. But, unfortunately the PIC was not around. The worst part is, the staffs at printing center informed us the minimum requirement to get free photocopy is each document should make 100 copies. Since we only requesting +/_  40 copies, they refused to take in our request. However, the staffs advises us to meet the PIC tomorrow morning and negotiate with him so we could get our job done.
             Tomorrow, maybe me and Su Ching will go to meet the PIC. Hopefully, he will be kind enough to fulfill our request. Anyhow, it is better to have Plan B. Guys, let's think about Plan B.

Object:

This game aims to assess students’ current knowledge in their use of English. It also aims to raise students’ awareness about the common mistakes they make in using the language.

Rules:

1) Players should communicate in English only.

2) Players should not refer to any form of references such as dictionary, mobile phone dictionary and Online Search Engine (e.g. Google).

Group Size:

One group of five to ten people.

Language Skills:

a) Macro Skills – Listening and Reading.

b) Micro – Grammar & Vocabulary.

Level:

Intermediate level and above.

Duration:

20 minutes (5 mins briefing + 15 mins game)

Preparation:

Again Lunch Issue :(

Hey sweeties,
Previously i send a post related to lunch section, but at that time the venue was KTF hall but since it has been changed to KDSE hall we may need to consider about this again. The location of the hall is exactly first floor of the KDSE cafe, it is good that it is at the cafe, but there is a  problem sometimes(may say most of the time) the restaurants in the cafe are not opening for lunch time especially at the weekend, since most of the students are out of campus.There are 2 restaurants actively working in the cafe. So i have a suggestion, how if we deal with the restaurant and they cook a few types of local foods that also international student can also eat like Nasi Goreny Ayam Kunyit or whatsoever. What do you think guys, students will still pay for themselves, but we are only going to make sure one of the cafe is definitely open otherwise, all of us will remain hungry since there is no other cafe around KDSE... :((

GROUPING of students.

Hello everyone,
I have a suggestion about the grouping. Since i guess Habe has the latest participant list, 40 students, we may group them before the camp. There will be 5 groups decided and each group consist 8 students. If we group the students before the camp, we may save time and moreover i will know how many girls and guys in a group, since i am going to prepare the bracelets. What do you think? Please share your ideas... :)

Let's make the hall attractive?

Hello & Selamunaleykum Guys.

            For the language camp, since we are guys trying to be professional and do our best, I would want to consider about the environment of the hall. I thought of attraction and welcoming scene to make difference. I had something in my mind: I want to cover some snacks for the entrance and create attractive and colorful environment for the incoming. For this, I think we do not need so much money, it can be cheaper just buying the majong paper and prepate some attractive scene with majong papers. this is my idea. if you like to vote, we can proceed it and prepare it.

Stationery Updates

So, the stationery that we have applied last week is now in my room. I get it from the faculty office this morning.

What we have get are:

1. Mahjong paper : 15 pieces
2. A4 paper : 2 rims 
3. 2B pencil : 7 boxes
4. Marker pen : 2 boxes
5. Masking tape: 2

Although the amount is slightly differ from what we have applied, however I think the amount of materials that we get now is more than enough.

Discuss about station game

Dear all, besides as a photographer, I got another new job as a facilitator in station game section for this coming language camp. My job is to create a game or find a suitable game for this section and play with them.  As considered, each station has 20 minutes for each group since we have 40 fresh students attend this language camp. But, how many of them are male and how many of them are female? (I heard that girls are more than boys)

So in this section they will divide into 5 teams and each of the team will contain with eight people. Then I want you guys’ ideas about how to distribute them.

- How many boys or girls in one group?

-Will they have a team leader in per group?

Otherwise, I also want to know the rules in the station game section, it that a mark –collection period? That means each group play the game to gain the marks for their purpose and make them more competitive?

Or they only play the game for win and enjoy without the mark given?  I ‘m a kinda or blur in this boundary? Because if it is a mark- collection period, the type of the games we prepared should consider about the mark given. Consequently, the game they play will like win once then get one mark instead of play the game without any mark given. Then if like this, what kind of game we should prepared for this section? Crossword-Puzzle, word –selection game or role –play game?

So game masters, give your own opinions about the station game.

        As you all know, we may still need to buy few things or materials depending on what are we going to get from the faculty tomorrow. So I really need to know two things before I can buy anything. First, all PIC, please make a list of what we need depending on the games you choose. Second, please send your list to Su Ching so she can decide what we already have and what we still need to buy. Third, please Su Ching, send me the list of the things I need to buy only so I can go out and buy them by maximum Friday next week.

Station Games

Dear all,

it is just a week away from our language camp, I am getting anticipated, hope the same goes to you guys! =)

For our team, we have just had a discussion yesterday and confirmed most of the games of language camp. Thanks for all the station masters who sent their games. Station masters, the next step will be submitting the proper trainer's document (the format given by Mr Ghazali) by this Sunday as we need it for printing urgently.

First of all, we would like to apologise as we are selecting the games without much discussion with you all due to the limited time. However, the games were selected based on:
1. The duration for the game (only 20 minutes each)
2. Level of the game (due to the time, preferably simple and meaningful game)
3. The review of all the games for the whole day to make sure that there is no repetition of learning outcome and skills. Hope that everyone understand, if you have any questions or doubts, please approach us as soon as possible.

Game for Session 3 PIC : Nabila

Hello everyone, for this post, I need you to refer to the previous schedule and PICs post as it is related to what I'm about to post. Okay, for the 3rd session, I would like to post about the game that we, the activity department discussed. The game is inter-related with each other. I need cooperation from the group facis. If you have any questions or problems, you can refer to the PIC of each game. Please take note that for all 3 games, the time allocated is 1 hour.

Session 3 PIC : Nabila



Game : Play with an imaginary object [ PIC : Nabila]
How to play it :
In a group, students will be given an imaginary object (it can be a picture in a paper) to interact with it, and pass it to the person next to them. The person next to them will interact with it, and put it back on the table. They cannot say anything to the person (no verbal or oral interaction). Since we have 8 students in a group, we will pair them up. Therefore, we will have different objects for them.

Game : Sentence at a time - storytelling [PIC : Ka Mun]
How to play it :
The goal of the game is to tell a story one sentence at a time. At the beginning of the sentence, students will be given the same sentence and they need to continue the sentence making it a story. The interesting part is, they have to integrate at least 3 words from the object of the game before.


Game : Narrating a story [PIC : Ainul]
How to play it :
We need two people to play this game. One person narrates while the other person acts. We will have variation for this game. Also, since we have 8 students per group, 4 students will narrate and the other 4 will act out. Later, they will switch role. This game is related with the first two game.

Sketch and preparation
For the preparation and sketch, the time allocated is 2 hours. For this slot, all group facis are needed to be in-charge of their group and guide them. We will brief you about your roles face to face this week.

Changes, Please Take Note =)

I have discussed with Su Ching ( the PIC for Printing), so based on her advise, I need to prepare the programme booklet and send it for printing. We might need 40-45 copies (estimation). Apart of that, other documents too. So, I would like the change the date of compilation. Activity unit and Director please take note, I need the documents i have asked initially by coming Monday ( 3rd Dec 2012). In order to avoid any unpleasant incidents. SO, GIRLS and GUY please take note of it. Thank you.

Programme Booklet Printing

Hey guys, previously I told to Habe and Fatima that we can print for free if we have the approval letters at the photocopy centre at SUB building. And I have confirmed with them, and they said yes we can print it for free at a printing room beside post office.

However, based on my experience (dealing this case), the printing process is time-consuming, they take days to help us print. So, as a reminder, please standardize the content of the booklet by Sunday, so that we can print it on Monday, and hopefully we can get the booklet by Friday (7/12).
