Responsibilities for the Language Camp (Nur Amirah)

Hi everyone.

For this language camp, I was in charged of the registration for the participants along with my partner, Dolly. For the registration committee, we had to buy stickers as the reward for the participants for each of the game as well as we had to make the name tags for the participants and the facilitators as well. The materials were bought accordingly making sure it was enough for the real day. However, during the day of the language camp, we actually ran out of double tapes to be stuck on the name tags, hence we had to rush to go and buy a new one and luckily, it did not take a lot of time and the problem and chaos between us was settled.

On the day of the language camp, I was assigned to be one of the facilitators for the participants and I collaborated with my partner, Ain and I think, all in all,  it was a job well done between us for our particular group named 'Gay' (which means 'happy', reflecting the group and the language camp itself). In contrary, I believe there were some challenges becoming a facilitator that day, firstly, because giving instructions to the participants were not that easy. As the facilitator, I had to re-explain the rule of the games played and make them really understand each of the game. But, in some parts, some of the participants actually rephrased the instructions that they have heard from the game masters according to their understanding and that helped to make them clear of the game rules.

Moreover, being a facilitator means that I was responsible to gauge the participants' interest and at first, some of them expressed their dissatisfaction to even be in the language camp through their facial expressions and small whispers between each other. However, I believe after they have made themselves comfortable with each other, and had some fun playing the games, they had their attention into the games. It was not easy because some of them felt like they should not be in the language camp at first, and that was a big challenge as a facilitator. I managed to engage with them by asking questions about themselves, befriending them slowly and making them feel happy to be there.

All in all, it was a fun duty to have become a facilitator for the language camp as I was able to successfully carry out my job even though the environment was quite hot and tiring, even for the participants. I had a great time; learnt and gained more experiences of handling people in a language camp.
