PLAY WITH INTONATION
Objectives:
1.
To
role-play the situation provided suitable to the context
2.
To use
appropriate intonation according to the situations provided.
Language Skills:

Level: Intermediate to high
Duration: 30 minutes
Materials: Paper and pencil
Procedures:
Briefing (5 minutes)
1.
Teacher
writes on one phrase or sentence followed by five different situations as in a,
b, c, d and e.
2.
Teacher
demonstrates on how the game works:
a)
Teacher
picks out one phrase. For example, 'Where are you going?"
b)
Teacher
writes down five different situations:
·
how a
father talks to his daughter who get out of their house during midnight time;
·
a
sister talks to her little brother who pour the milk on floor;
·
asking
foreigner who seems lost in big city;
·
a
mother talks and her son left away intended and ;
·
a girl
asks her boyfriend.
c)
Teacher
prepares five pieces of written paper as a, b, c, d and e respectively. Teacher
asks students to draw lots the paper.
d)
Teacher
asks student to look at their paper, and think of suitable intonation according
to written situation in their draw lot's paper.
e)
Students
need to speak out their intonation using phrase stated and other members need
to guess which situation that suitable with that particular intonation.
Demonstrate (5 minutes)
1)
The
teacher demonstrates the game once in front of the class.
2)
Playing
the game (15 minutes)
3)
Teacher
divide the class into few groups-5person for each group
4)
Each
group needs to prepare their own phrase and five different situations that appropriate
with phrase written.
5)
After
finish writing phrase and situations, each group need to change the phrase with
the other group.
6)
Each
group need to draw lots and figure out the appropriate intonation according to
their draw lots paper.
Debriefing (5 minute)
1.
The
teacher asks the students on what they have learned from the game.
Variations:
1.
The
teacher could make a competition between two groups as if they are playing the ‘charade’ game.
