AN ALIEN
LEARNING OBJECTIVES:

LEVEL OF PROFICIENCY: INTERMEDIATE AND ADVANCED
DURATION: 30 MINUTES
MATERIALS: TWO PIECES OF PAPER AND PEN
PROCEDURES:
Briefing: (5 minutes)
- The teacher introduces the game “An Alien” to the students.
- The students are divided into pairs. One person is a human and the other one is an alien.
- The teacher explains the rules of the games to the students:
i-
The alien
will ask “What is _________?” to the human which the word that is to be asked
will be prepared by the teacher. For example, “What is zoo?”
ii-
The human
will have to define and explain the word and the alien will keep on asking one
word he/she does not understand from the explanation.
iii-
The steps of
questioning and answering will be carried on until the alien does not know what
to ask anymore.
iv-
When asking
the question, the alien cannot hesitate. If the alien is not able to come up
with any questions within 5 second, they will have to change roles.
Demonstrating (5 minutes):
The teacher demonstrates the game with a student where
the teacher is the human and the student is the alien.
Play: (15
minutes)
- Each student will find a partner and starts the game as soon as the teacher addresses so.
- The person on the right side will be the human and the other one will be the alien.
- The alien will ask the question “What is Zoo?” and the human will have to explain. Note that Zoo is the selected word the teacher has assigned to begin the game. It can be other words depending on the teacher.
- From the definition or explanation given by the human, the alien will pick any word and ask another question for example “What is Animals?” assuming the answer given by the human is “Zoo is a place for animals.”
- This will continue until the alien does not have any words to ask within 5 seconds. Then they have to change roles.
- Marks will be calculated from how many words the alien is able ask. The more words, the higher marks the alien gets.
- Step 3-5 will be repeated in one round. Within 15 minutes, 2-3 rounds of the game can be applied.
- Prizes will be given to the winner.
- The teacher asks feedback from the students.
