Tandem Writing
1. Objectives:
a)
To write a story
based on students’ creativity according to theme assigned ( love story, ghost
story or animal story)
b)
To read and
choose the best story line among group members for skit rehearsal
2. Level:
Intermediate
3. Language:

4. Duration: 40 minutes
5. Materials: a) pen/pencils b) A4 papers
6. Procedure:
a) Briefing:
I.
Students are
asked to sit in one big circle.
II.
Students are given
a piece of blank A4 paper each and is made sure that everyone has a pencil or
pen.
III.
Students are
asked to write their names on top of the paper.
IV.
The facilitator
introduces the name of the activity: Tandem writing.
V.
The facilitator
asks students to write down
-Once upon a time
-Every day
-One day
-Because of that
-After that
-Finally
with some space in between on the paper
VI.
The facilitator
explains the rule of the activity to students:
i. Students need to write a story based on the theme
given: love story, ghost story or animal story (the themes have been assigned
to every facilitator earlier on)
ii. Everyone takes turn to continue writing each other’s
stories.
iii. Firstly, the students are asked to write the first
sentence themselves.
iv. Students are given 2-3 minute time to write a
sentence. When time is up, they have to pass the paper to the person sitting
next to them. That person continues writing the story with the next header (
one day, because of that, etc)
v.
When students
have finished writing the last sentence, it is required that they return the
paper to respective owners.
vi.
The facilitator asks
students to read their stories one by one.
vii.
Students choose the
best story to be used in skit competition.
b)
Demo
A. The facilitator shows example on how the games work.
B. The facilitator shows an example on how to write names
and headers on the paper.
C. The lecturer asks if there is any problems about the
game.
c)
Playing the game
A. Students write their name on top of the paper.
B. The duration for Tandem writing is about 15-20
minutes.
C. The duration for students to read their story is about
10-15 minutes.
d)
Debriefing
A. The facilitator asks students what they have learnt from
the game.
B. The students respond to the questions.
7. Variation.
a) Each student is allowed to write more than
one sentence but not more than two sentences.
