Language Camp A (During)

After an hour journey, we finally arrived at SMK Masai. It was like having thousand of butterflies in stomach when I lay my eyes on 200 primary students from 10 schools. Facilitators queued up in one line on stage and introduced ourselves to all of the participants of the camp. We even told them about the ‘Hello and Hi’ rule which is crucial in order to get students attention in any situation. Next, we divided the participants into 20 groups and proceed with ‘Ice Breaking’ session.

During Ice Breaking session, I believe most of the facilitators faced the same issue in having difficulty to persuade these students to talk. Most of my students were reticent members and also captive students. Some of the facilitators used adaptation strategies on their ways of approaching the participants and fortunately, they gave positive feedback towards us. They also talked to each other about their names, schools and hobbies.

Most of my students gave positive feedback in participating language activities; however they were very passive in throwing out their ideas or to talk using English language with their friends. For instance, students of my group hesitated to draw the team logo at first, however after the team has its own logo, they put their best effort to draw and paint the logo together as a team. They even lay on their stomach while colouring the picture which shows excitement. When it comes to Tandem Writing, these students showed their boredom because they could not think beyond of their imagination due to the theme given. Alas, the facilitators discussed the story in a group and manage to come up with one story for each group. For my group, I acted as an alien and asked them what happen to the alien next. I even gave few examples to help the students to create their own imagination.

For skit performance, a few students show their excitement while others shows another way around. They even asked my help to create the script of their story.  For Skit Rehearsal, some students hesitate to do a few actions because too shy and some students give suggestions on props needed for the performance.
